Most of the Costa del Sol’s coastline was built out decades ago. Alcaidesa is the exception: a long stretch of open sand at the western end of the coast, backed by a links golf course rather than by apartment blocks, with the Rock of Gibraltar to the south and the mountains of Morocco visible across the strait on a clear day. The Beaches at Alcaidesa
Playa de la Alcaidesa runs for several kilometres below the urbanisation, a wide stretch of sand with Blue Flag status, calm and shallow-shelving water, and a gentle gradient that makes it straightforward with small children. Its defining feature is what sits behind it: the links golf course occupies most of the land along the beach, so there are access points only at either end. The result is a beach that stays genuinely quiet even in August, and quieter still if you walk. Facilities cluster at the access points, with lifeguards, showers and beach bars through the summer season, and there is a cliff-top promenade at Avenida de la Hacienda above the western end.
The northern end, where the coast turns towards Punta Mala and the Carbonera lighthouse, is known locally as Playa del Faro. The walk up to it along the sand is one of the better hours on this coast, and it stays empty most of the year.
Above the Beach, Not On It
Our homes are beachside rather than beachfront. The land at Alcaidesa climbs from the shoreline, and both developments sit on that rise, which is precisely why they have sea views: from the beach itself you see the water, but from the slope you see the coastline. Both Serenity and Infinity are around fifteen minutes on foot down to the sand, or five minutes by car. If you want to step from your door onto the sand, these are not those homes, and we would rather say so now. Life by the Water in Alcaidesa
The coast here is used year-round rather than seasonally. There is a cliff-top promenade above Playa de la Hacienda for walking and running, beach bars at the access points through the summer, and water sports off both beaches. The walk north along the sand towards the Carbonera lighthouse is one of the better hours on this coast, and it stays empty most of the year.
Sotogrande and its marina are immediately next door for sailing and for restaurants, Gibraltar and its airport are around 20 minutes away, and the Los Alcornocales natural park rises inland, where cork oak forest runs down towards the sea.
