There’s something for everyone, from cultural festivals in the village to seaside fun in La Cala. We’ve put together a guide to this month’s events, and we’re sure there’s something there for you to enjoy.
Cultural festivals and local traditions
International People’s Day (Mijas International Day) Mid-May, Mijas Pueblo (please check local press for exact dates):
Mijas has one of the most cosmopolitan populations on the Costa del Sol, which is why International People’s Day sees Mijas Pueblo converted into a fun multicultural fair, typically on the third Saturday of May. Over 30 countries showcase their culture, crafts, music, dance, and gastronomy. Visitors can meander through stalls to try global cuisines and enjoy live performances. This family-friendly festival celebrates Mijas’ diverse community and grows in popularity every year. It’s an all-day fiesta of international flavours and fun, ideal for residents and tourists to bond over food, music, and cultural exchange.
‘Darkness into Light’ Charity Walk 0600 of May 10, La Cala de Mijas
In the early hours of May 10th, join hundreds of locals for a 5km dawn walk along La Cala’s stunning coastal boardwalk, part of a global suicide prevention initiative. Starting at 6:00am on the La Cala boulevard, participants walk from darkness to sunrise to raise funds and awareness for mental health, in collaboration with Pieta House and local charity Afesol. It’s a moving, community-driven event symbolising hope and unity, a reminder of the caring spirit in Mijas.
Gran Parque de Mijas Grand Opening Late May (Date TBC), Las Lagunas
Mijas finally celebrates the opening of the Gran Parque de Mijas, the largest green space on the Costa del Sol, which is expected to open in May 2025. Spanning 27 hectares (270,000 m²), this expansive park features 2,900 trees, playgrounds, sports facilities, a lake, and an amphitheatre. The opening event promises family-friendly activities and a first look at this impressive “green lung” for the region. Exact opening date will be confirmed by Mijas Town Hall announcements, so keep an eye on local press to make sure you don’t miss the fun.
Music and performance
Free Flamenco Shows & Artisan Market Wednesdays & Saturdays, Mijas Pueblo
Experience authentic flamenco dancing in the open air, courtesy of Mijas’ Tourism Department. Every Wednesday at 1200, Plaza Virgen de la Peña in Mijas Pueblo comes alive with a free flamenco show, accompanied by a handicraft market from 0900 to 1430. On Saturdays at noon, the flamenco moves to Plaza de la Constitución. These traditional performances offer a glimpse into Andalucian culture, with the adjacent craft market perfect for picking up local art, ceramics, or souvenirs while enjoying the show. (Tip: Parking in Mijas Pueblo is free for the first hour, and just €1 for up to 9 hours.)
‘Cantando para los animales’ Benefit Concert Sunday, May 11, Las Lagunas
On May 11 at Teatro Manuel España along the coast in Las Lagunas, local musicians and choirs present ‘Cantando para los animales’, a charity concert for animal welfare. This afternoon event combines live music with a good cause, raising funds for animal shelters. Families and animal lovers are welcome; kids often delight in songs and perhaps a cameo by a furry friend. It exemplifies how Mijas’ cultural scene often ties in with community support.
Stand-Up comedy in English Tuesday, May 20, Las Lagunas
Laughter fills the air at The Cazbah Live Lounge in Las Lagunas with an English-language stand-up comedy night on May 20 at 2030. Hosted by Stand-Up Comedy Spain, this evening brings expats and locals together for a fun night of jokes and storytelling. With free entry (reservation recommended), it’s a relaxed outing, especially popular among the international community in Mijas. Food and drink is available from the bar to complete the evening.
Food and drink events
La Cala ‘Sardinada’ (Sardine Festival) Annual May 1 tradition, La Cala Beach
While this happened May 1st, it’s worth a mention as it sets the tone for May. Each year on May 1, La Cala de Mijas hosts a Sardine Day on the beachfront, grilling over 600 kg of fresh sardines on open fires and serving them free to the public. The festive atmosphere includes flamenco music, dancing, and beach games. It’s the Costa del Sol’s way of welcoming summer. If you missed it, mark your calendar for next year – it’s a must-do local experience!
Andalucian wine and food pairing Mid-May, Mijas Pueblo
Wine lovers will relish an Andalucian Wine Tasting event at a local bodega or cultural centre in Mijas Pueblo (dates vary; often mid-month). For example, Pura Cepa Mijas in La Cala hosts wine tastings – one was on May 2, 2025 – and similar events pop up through May. These tastings introduce regional wines (think Ronda reds, Málaga sweet wines, sherries) paired with local cheeses and tapas. It’s a social evening to swirl, sniff, and sip while learning about Andalucía’s rich wine heritage.
La Cala Lions Spring Fair and Fashion Show Sunday, May 25, Butibamba Park
A beloved community event, the La Cala de Mijas Lions Club’s Spring Fair kicks off at 1100 on May 25th in Butibamba Park (La Cala). This free-entry fair features 50+ artisan stalls selling handmade crafts, jewellery, and local products, a food truck and live entertainment throughout the day. The highlight is a fashion parade showcasing outfits from the Lions Charity Shop – all for sale to support charity. It’s a family-friendly day out with a feel-good factor: enjoy shopping, music, and even catch the latest trends from a local boutique, all while supporting community causes.
Bluefin Tuna Carving (Ronqueo del Atún) Saturday, May 10, La Cala Resort
Celebrating Andalucía’s seafood tradition, La Cala Resort hosts a ‘Ronqueo de Atún Rojo’ (Bluefin Tuna Cutting) on May 10th. In this unique culinary show, a master carver butchers a giant tuna, explaining each cut – an age-old coastal tradition. Following the carving, guests can savour fresh tuna tapas and wine pairings. It’s equal parts educational and mouthwatering, illustrating the Costa del Sol’s connection to the sea. (Reservations typically required via the resort’s dining events calendar.)
Family-friendly and outdoor activities
Mijas Street Market & Fairground Fridays, May 10th and 24th, Las Lagunas
The bi-weekly Mijas Street Market in Las Lagunas (recinto ferial) is a treasure trove for bargain hunters. On Fridays, you’ll find stalls selling everything from fresh produce and spices to clothes, pottery, and toys. It’s lively, bustling, and very local – kids will love picking out sweets or fun trinkets. While there, check out the permanent fairground rides if open (sometimes weekends or special occasions). It’s a great way to spend a morning mingling with residents and practicing a little Spanish (“¿Cuánto cuesta?”).
Unique local experiences
Weekly Artisan Market, La Cala Every Saturday, La Cala Boulevard
Complementing the Lions Spring Fair, La Cala de Mijas also hosts a weekly Saturday market (1000-1400) on its boulevard. Browse stalls selling organic veggies, homemade jams, artisan breads, and crafts. It’s smaller than the Friday market but has a charming local vibe. Often there’s a kids’ activity corner – like face painting or a bouncy castle – making it a relaxed family outing. Pick up a fresh loaf and some olives, then hit the beach – perfect Saturday plan!
Mijas day tripper activities – If you live near Mijas, or are scouting it as a future home, don’t miss these year-round gems:
- Mijas Chocolate Factory Tour: Kids (and adults) can make their own chocolate bar at Mayan Monkey Mijas, a quirky little chocolate shop in Mijas Pueblo.
- Carromato de Mijas (Miniatures Museum): Fascinating tiny curiosities (like a painted grain of rice!) in Mijas Pueblo’s offbeat museum.
- Burro-Taxi Selfie: Love them or question them, the donkey “taxis” are iconic. Snap a selfie (with respect to the burro) to commemorate your visit.
