UNIQUE RESIDENTIAL HOMES AND LIFESTYLE

Spring events on the Costa del Sol you won’t want to miss

Every season is our favourite season, but perhaps spring is our extra-favourite. Maybe it’s because we’re leaving behind winter – although on the Costa del Sol the winter months are delightfully bright and mild – or perhaps it is the promise of long summer days just around the corner. Whatever the reason, spring here has an appeal all its own. Terraces fill again, the evenings begin to draw out and the cultural calendar gathers pace.

It is one of the most enjoyable times of year to be here. The sunshine is warm without the intensity of peak summer, the beaches feel open and inviting and the region’s event calendar begins to gain momentum. Across Málaga, Marbella and the surrounding areas, spring brings a lively mix of film festivals, major sporting events, music performances and traditional Andalucian celebrations.

Whether you live here or have a holiday home in the area, here are some of the events worth making sure you’re around for.

Málaga Film Festival

6–15 March 2026
Teatro Cervantes, Cine Albéniz and venues across Málaga city centre

One of Spain’s most respected cultural events arrives in Málaga every March. The Málaga Film Festival celebrates Spanish and Latin American cinema and has grown into one of the country’s most important film events.

The 2026 festival runs from 6 to 15 March and centres around the historic Teatro Cervantes in the heart of the city. Throughout the ten-day programme, visitors can attend premieres of feature films, documentaries and short films, alongside industry presentations and discussions.

The festival culminates in the presentation of the Biznaga awards, honouring the best films shown during the event. Beyond the screenings themselves, the atmosphere across Málaga’s historic centre is part of the attraction. Around Calle Larios, Plaza de la Merced and the port area, cafés and terraces are filled with filmmakers, actors and cinema lovers discussing the latest premieres late into the evening.

For anyone who enjoys cinema and culture, Málaga during the festival offers a lively and engaging experience.

Semana Santa Málaga

29 March – 5 April 2026
Historic centre of Málaga

Few events capture the cultural spirit of Andalucía as powerfully as Semana Santa. Málaga’s Holy Week celebrations take place from 29 March to 5 April 2026 and transform the historic centre into the stage for one of the most dramatic religious traditions in Spain.

Throughout the week, brotherhoods carry elaborate thrones bearing religious statues through the city streets. These remarkable structures can weigh several tonnes and are carried by teams of devotees moving in carefully choreographed steps. Bands accompany the processions while the scent of incense fills the air and thousands of spectators gather along the streets to watch.

The main processions pass through areas including Calle Larios, Plaza de la Constitución and Málaga Cathedral, although many of the most atmospheric moments happen in the smaller streets of the old town. Candlelight, music and centuries-old ritual combine to create an unforgettable spectacle that attracts visitors from across Spain and beyond.

Even for those seeing it for the first time, it is a moving and visually extraordinary experience that offers a fascinating glimpse into Andalucian culture.

Towns along the Costa del Sol will have their own versions of the Málaga event, however, it’s worth making the effort to head to Málaga if you can at least once.

Marbella Arena spring concerts

22–23 May 2026
Marbella Arena, Nueva Andalucía (above Puerto Banús)

As spring moves towards early summer, Marbella’s entertainment calendar begins to warm up. One venue that signals the start of the season each year is Marbella Arena, an open-air concert venue built within the former bullring’s structure, just above Puerto Banús.

On Friday 22 May 2026, British house music artist Max Dean performs at the venue, bringing his energetic electronic sound to Marbella for a high-profile live show. Known for his appearances at major European festivals and clubs, his set promises a lively atmosphere and an international crowd.

The following evening, Saturday 23 May, the arena hosts the RnB & Slow Jams Experience. This event celebrates classic RnB and soul with live performances and DJ sets featuring some of the genre’s most recognisable tracks. With warm spring evenings and the open-air setting of the arena, it is an ideal way to enjoy Marbella’s nightlife as the season begins to build.

Marbella Arena has quickly established itself as one of the coast’s most distinctive venues, combining impressive acoustics with a circular amphitheatre design that creates an intimate yet energetic atmosphere.

Sotogrande International Polo Spring Series

April – May 2026
Ayala Polo Club, Sotogrande

Just a short drive from Alcaidesa, Sotogrande’s polo fields begin their season during the spring months with a series of international tournaments held at Ayala Polo Club.

Sotogrande has long been associated with world-class polo and the spring series offers an elegant introduction to the sport ahead of the famous summer tournaments. Matches typically take place in the afternoon, with spectators able to watch from the sidelines while enjoying the relaxed countryside surroundings that define this area.

International players compete across several weekends and the atmosphere is sociable and welcoming. Visitors can walk around the grounds, enjoy refreshments and experience the unique blend of sport and lifestyle that has made Sotogrande one of Europe’s most respected polo destinations.

For residents of Alcaidesa and nearby areas, it is an enjoyable and easy outing that perfectly captures the region’s outdoor lifestyle.

Events like these highlight one of the many pleasures of living on the Costa del Sol. Within a short drive you can attend an international film festival, watch world-class sport, enjoy live music or experience traditions that have shaped Andalucian culture for centuries.
